With Tea Stories

When the aroma of tea drifts over the hillside

The Anshun Tea Connection of the Fu Xiangping Family Across Three Generations

Wang Fanqiu Cen, Chen Qian

The 23rd day of the first lunar month (3 Month 10 Day ) The “Guizhou Qianling Tea Harvest Festival” was grandly held at the tea plantation base of Guizhou Fuyuan Tea Industry Co., Ltd. in Guanling Bouyei and Miao Autonomous County. Leaders from across the country, as well as provincial, municipal, and county levels, and tea merchants from various regions attended the event to cheer for Guizhou tea!

This is precisely the time when… " In the season when “the light rain on Tianjie moistens the earth like soft butter,” we set off early in the morning from Xixiu District, Anshun City. Along the way, we passed the Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area, crossed the Huajiang Bridge, and headed to Yongning Town in Guanling. Then, winding our way up the hairpin mountain road, we made our way toward Dabai Cave in Shaying Town. ……

The morning mist had not yet fully dissipated, veiling the mountains in a delicate gauze. As I climbed the hillside, the view suddenly opened up: peach blossoms were red, plum blossoms white, their petals glistening with dew. Tea gardens stretched out across the hills and fields in layered, cascading patterns—dark green tea rows undulating with the contours of the land, like the fingerprints of the earth. Tea pickers, clad in vibrant, colorful ethnic attire, moved among the rows, their fingertips dancing like butterflies as they rose and fell in graceful, fluttering motions. This is a vivid scene from the tea mountains of Guizhou in early spring: “The fragrance of tea lingers high in the mountains amid clouds and mist; the water is sweet, its clear springs echoing the soul of frost and snow.” "

As early as the ninth day of the first lunar month, I had already interviewed the owner of this tea garden—Fu Xiangping, Chairman and General Manager of Guizhou Fuyuan Tea Industry Co., Ltd. That day, he was crouching between the tea rows, gently pinching tender leaves between his fingers and holding them up to his nose to inhale their fragrance; he had been performing this gesture for thirty-six years.

Speaking of how General Fu first became connected with Guizhou tea, there’s a story behind it. He hails from Pan’an County in Jinhua, Zhejiang—a region long renowned as the “hometown of tea,” where both his parents were tea farmers. Following in his father’s footsteps, he began working with tea at the age of twenty. Driven by the fearless spirit of a young buck, he once went to Fujian to take over a tea plantation, though his “achievements were so-so.” Later, he returned to his hometown and joined his parents in managing their family’s tea garden, gradually amassing a fairly substantial fortune.

That was 2016 One year, a fellow townsman working in Guizhou sent him a package of tea. After brewing it, he found the tea liquor clear and bright, with a sweet, mellow taste—so much better, in fact, than the tea he’d grown back home or in Fujian. “That’s when I knew I was hooked,” he said. Once he came to Guizhou and took a look around, he realized that the region’s elevation, latitude, soil, water quality, and climate were nothing short of tailor‑made by heaven for producing organic tea. Shaying, located in the heart of central Guizhou, enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with an annual average temperature… 16 Approximately, frost-free period 300 For more than a day, this region lies at a low latitude and high altitude, with large temperature differences between day and night, shrouded in clouds and mist, and abundant diffuse light. As a result, tea tree buds and leaves retain their tender qualities for a long time, and the amino acid content is exceptionally high. The soil is yellow earth and calcareous soil, slightly acidic, rich in organic matter, and the water source comes from clear mountain streams—completely free from any industrial pollution. He decided to invest in Guizhou. , This has gone on for a full ten years!

Today, his tea plantation covers an area of… 7300 Mu, to 2026 Year 2 The total monthly investment has reached 8000 Ten thousand yuan, with two buildings constructed. 5000 The company operates standard factory buildings spanning several thousand square meters, with tea plantations located in Shaying Town and Pogong Town in Guanling County, Puping Town in Anlong County, Baoji Township in Panzhou City, Jichang Township in Xixiu District, and Gaofeng Town in Gui’an New Area. It has grown into the largest tea enterprise in Anshun and one of the larger tea enterprises within the province, with annual sales of approximately 60 million yuan, while also creating employment opportunities for several thousand local farmers in the surrounding areas. " “Back when I was at home doing nothing, now I can earn several thousand to over ten thousand yuan a year from tea picking. It’s close to home, and I can still take care of the elderly and children—so we’ve become ‘office workers’ at the tea garden,” a farmer woman carrying a tea basket said with a smile to the author.

Fu Xiangping’s close friend Tang Yongjun is “China” . “A Master of Tea Making in the National Tea Industry” and “Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of the Traditional Craft of West Lake Longjing Tea,” he is a pivotal figure in the company’s tea cultivation, production, and quality control. He told the author: " Tea production is the key to ultimately delivering a finished product. However, during the cultivation process, we neither use pesticides nor herbicides; our fertilizers consist of rapeseed meal and cow manure—these are the prerequisites for determining tea quality. In a word, only a purely natural growing environment can give rise to the finest products!

According to organic tea standards, it takes four years from planting to harvest, which means that during the first four years, there are only inputs and no outputs. The initial investment per mu of tea garden exceeds 10,000 yuan, and many people have asked me whether I’m afraid. Fu Xiangping smiled and said: " Don’t worry—I see the bright future of Guizhou, the rewards that will come in twenty or thirty years. You can’t do agriculture without a long‑term vision; running a business requires even greater composure. Entrepreneurs need the strategic fortitude to stay calm under pressure. Guizhou tea is of excellent quality—we have every reason to be confident!

Fu Xiangping’s father is in his eighties this year, and his mother is also over seventy. The elderly couple have lived in Zhejiang for several decades and moved to Guizhou a few years ago to support their son’s business. His son, Fu Chuan, this year… 28 He majored in Software Engineering in college. After working at a software development company in Hangzhou, he couldn’t resist his father’s persistent coaxing and persuasion, so he resigned and came to Guizhou, settling down at the foot of these tea mountains. There, he married a college-educated wife from Guizhou—and now, his son and daughter-in-law have also joined the tea management team.

Xiao Fu says that when he first arrived, he found it extremely unfamiliar—this place felt “separated from the rest of the world,” a stark contrast to Hangzhou. Some areas were still barren mountains, while in others tea trees had only just been planted; he couldn’t help but wonder, “When on earth will we ever see any tea leaves?” But as the years passed, he now sees vast stretches of tea hills lush and verdant, and his father’s tea business has grown bigger and better with each passing day. This has only strengthened his resolve to build a career and pursue his dreams here. He says, “With the advancement of technology, applying new techniques to planting, management, and production—and exploring smart agriculture—is an inevitable trend in history. Drone-based monitoring allows us to get a clear, bird’s‑eye view of our tea estates right from the office. In the next step, by integrating artificial intelligence—such as using drones to spray bio‑pesticides, employing intelligent systems to monitor tea garden pests and diseases, and deploying robots for tea harvesting—these visions can all be turned into reality.” He is currently responsible for expanding sales channels. With a broader outlook, he’s focused not only on traditional offline channels but also on e‑commerce and cross‑border e‑commerce, which have become the main battlegrounds for the younger generation like Xiao Fu. He says, “Guizhou tea is so exceptional—there’s no doubt we must let friends across the country and around the world come to know it and embrace it!”

Fu Xiangping told the author that when he decided to invest in Guizhou, the local villagers didn’t trust him—they wondered, “Why would a stranger from out of town come and take over our land?” ? The local Party committee and government have embraced a spirit of ideological liberation and have provided strong support in areas such as land transfer, policy incentives, and the resolution of disputes. The successful establishment and robust growth of his tea business in Guizhou would have been impossible without the assistance of leaders at all levels. Today, the more than ten kilometers of mountain road leading to the tea plantation were specially constructed with dedicated investment from the Guanling County Government.

Nine years have passed, and their flagship product, “Yunshang Fuyuan,” has earned universal acclaim. Last year, he brought the tea to a digital economy conference in Hangzhou, where attendees raved about it after sampling it. After finishing his cup, a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s financial sector asked… : “Where does such excellent tea come from?” ?"

This passionate middle‑aged man is full of confidence in the future. His goal is to expand the tea plantation to more than 10,000 mu. At present, a new factory building with an investment of tens of millions of yuan is under construction. Since the company was founded, its main revenue has reached… 2 With revenues in the hundreds of millions of yuan, the company has paid substantial taxes to the state and been recognized as a “Provincial Key Leading Enterprise in Agricultural Industrialization.” It has also been certified as a “Specialized, Refined, Differentiated, and Innovative Enterprise,” and is committed to becoming a modern group enterprise integrating production, supply, sales, science, technology, industry, and trade—ultimately establishing itself as a renowned brand in the production and sale of premium and mid-to-high‑end teas.

" “Nowadays, young people love new tea drinks—milk tea, matcha—and there’s huge market demand,” he said. " We need to seize this opportunity—next spring, our matcha product line will be launched in bulk.

Standing high above the tea garden, one sees an endless expanse of lush greenery, while in the distance, swirling clouds fill the canyon like a sea. The integration of tea tourism is the next frontier for development; Fu Xiangping is currently building an observation deck on the mountaintop, allowing visitors to savor tea while marveling at the breathtaking spectacle of the cloud sea.

On “Tea Harvest Day,” the renowned singer Qu Bi’au, who had traveled all the way from Beijing to add to the festivities, filled the rolling, undulating mountains with her nightingale‑like “Tea Harvest Song”: “The verdant green hills stretch endlessly, one mountain after another; the tea gardens gently curve toward the clouds above; the cheerful songs of tea pickers ring out without cease; the golden tea buds keep on being picked, never-ending.” …… These golden buds scattered across the mountains will carry the spiritual essence of Guizhou’s landscapes, crossing oceans to enter countless homes, their fragrance wafting far and wide. ……
